I quite like GURPS, though it has its problems. 4th edition has fixed a lot of things, but also made some things worse.
GURPS always was the ultimate generic system, if only because of the huge number of high quality source books. Unlike Hero, it also had quite a bit of flavour.
The big change to 4th is that advantages and disadvantages are now a lot more flexible and consistant. This has caused it to be a lot more Hero like. There are now lots of modifiers for +10% or -5% to the cost of things depending on how they are used (is it a natural ability or magic?), which turns it into flavourles number crunching.
Much of it can be ignored, but I consider this something to avoid.
