Rooms

A room is a physical location in the world of Kingdoms, which has a description, coordinates and possible exits. The term room is used regardless of whether the location is a kitchen or part of a huge forest. The backend is after all a text adventure engine. Each room can have any number of exits - currently north, south, east and west are represented graphically, but any number of exits are possible since they are modelled using pointers to a location rather than a direction along a grid.

Coordinates

Each room has an x,y,z coordinate. The basic scale for the main world area is 1000 units (roughly equivalent to 1km). It is perfectly possible for there to be more than one room at a given coordinate. For example, a forest in the real world could have a Faerie forest overlaying it.

Cities, farms and other areas of interest use a smaller scale, currently 10 units per square. Buildings will probably use 1 unit per square.

For descriptions of the various types of land a room can represent, see Landscape.

Areas and Realms

Every room belongs to both an area and a realm.

An area represents a named geographic region, such as Sherwood Forest or the City of London. The standard area is simply Wilderness, which means nowhere of any importance.

A realm is a larger political area, such as Wessex or Mercia. There is no standard realm.

Each realm is part of a world - places in the world of men will all be in Middle Earth. Other worlds might be Faerie, Limbo or Hades.
