Timeline

Total timeline revamp… Requirements of the new timeline:

  • Big disconnect with the current day, so current events don't affect things.
  • Large volume of colonised space, to give plenty of backwater places to go to.
  • Limited tech, with mixture of tech levels across known space.

Dark Ages

The times prior to the 22nd century are known as the Dark Ages, since much information on them as been lost. The Machine Wars were partially responsible, and the insistence on storing everything on encrypted digital media that couldn't be read 50 years later made it even harder.

First Wave

The first jump drive is invented around 2150, and the colonisation of other star systems begins. Several different nations begin to form empires, though borders are very blurred, with some worlds have multiple colonies.

Machine Wars

In 2213, the Machines declare their independence in Africa. There is a nuclear strike by the Saudi Empire against them, and war soon follows. It spreads across the solar system, and then to the colony worlds, halting the colonisation effort and breaking communication links.

Fall of Sol

The last communication from Sol happens in 2228. It is assumed that Earth has been taken over by the Machines. No more human ships leave or enter Sol for many centuries.

Berserkers

Machine hunter-killer starships track down technological civilisations and wipe them out. A few human colony ships flee to distant worlds, but there is a collapse of human civilisation. Even worlds which are unaffected do not have the infrastructure to support a high tech society, and gradually collapse back into an early-20th century life style.

A few smaller colonies collapse back even further.

The Reborn

A group of humans about which very little is known. They come to some agreement with the Machines in 2499. The machines stop culling technology.

The Reconstruction

Towards the end of the 26th century, a number of nations begin to form as the larger worlds re-invent the jump drive, and communication starts up again.

New Vatican Dominion

In 2575, the NVD conquers a neighbouring world, and forms the first of the new stellar empires.

Soviet Stellar Union

A number of worlds unite to form the Soviet Stellar Union in 2591.

Federation of Worlds

In 2657 builds construction of first J2 ships, and cements its power over its trading partners. The technology is soon sold to other nations.

Colonisation Wars (2709-2774)

Friction between the various empires escalates into a shooting war in 2709, and strife spreads to all the major empires and across most of Known Space, dying down and flaring back up again on numerous occasions. The Sol Declaration is signed in 2774 which ends the warfare and defines the borders between empires.

The Golden Age (2775-2803)

A period of rapid growth and prosperity covering most of Known Space lasts for just over 100 years.

Dark Ages

Much of the 21st century is marked by the conflicts between superstition and rationality. After the rapid expansion of knowledge and technology in the late 20th century, things began to slow during the first half of the 21st. The rise (again) of religious doctrine caused certain branches of science to be off limits, and several wars in Europe and Asia increased development in the arts of killing, but not so much in basic research.

Around 2030-2050, there is the Little Death which killed a billion people, mostly in Europe, Middle East and India. Global financial collapse, leading to internal strife in America. Limited nuclear exchange occurs, probably an attack on China by Russia. China closes its borders and rebuilds.

American government collapses, strife which ends with the rise of a few mega corporations which can fund their own armies - generally those with access to hardware and/or resources. Leaves a wealthy technological elite in charge of a mostly uneducated poor.

By the end of the 21st century, the following powers have arisen:

The Chino-Soviet Union rises in the east, its massive land armies conquering most of eastern Asia. Dominated by the Chinese government. In 2091, tests the first prototype Jump Drive.

Christian Democratic America, run by the religious right.

CalTex - Dominates America with oil resources and technology.

Black Sky Industries - One of the few space powers, a conglomorate of companies such as Boeing, grabs a large share of the old US military complex.

Oregon Corporation - Mostly NW America, including Alaska and much of Canada. Military might plus lots of medical knowledge.

Arabian Empire - Resources, much of north Africa, Middle East and bits of Europe and Asia.

European Hegemony - Dominated by France and England. Highly corporate.

2124 begins first colonisation of habitable world. China begins mass colonisation project, followed closely by America. More worlds are discovered, and massive terraforming and colonisation projects begin.

Medical technology makes breakthroughs in anti-agathics, regeneration and other enhancements. On the whole, technological growth has been slowing, partially due to lack of funding and interest.

The New Enlightenment

Much of 22nd century sees growth in science understanding. TL10+ from about 2150.

Extra-solar Colonies view science as their way to independence, so there is a push in the colonies to understand technology. Colonies in Earth orbit and around the moon as a stepping stone to the stars.

Rise of the Immortals, single world government run by AIs which is. As the ruling classes tighten their grip, more people leave the Earth.

Two new classes at this point: Immortals use medical technology to extend their life spans, made up of the ruling elite of the previous century and their families. The immortality drugs are at one point made available to many people, but there is a clamp down for fear of a population explosion.

The second group are the True Humans, who use cybertech to link themselves with computers. They are partially uploaded, and consider themselves truly superior. Through a promise of longevity for all, they gain control of the world government.

Colonisation Wars

The Immortals try to gain control of the colonies, but there are too many of them. Factions form, break apart, and war with each other. Colonies close to Earth become united under the True Humans, and the Immortals are forced to move further from Earth. Warfare spreads across Known Space, and Earth gradually shuts down contact.

Crash

2294, Something happens on Earth, possibly a singularity of some kind, which spreads to those area within True Space. It may be that everyone has been made True Humans. The Immortals cease their wars and turn against Earth in fear, but are repelled.

24th Century

Nations ruled by the Immortals. Lower tech available to everyone else. Possibly thousands of human colonised worlds.
