Samuel Penn

I'm a Java/EDMS software developer living in Hampshire, England, and currently working at Aiimi as a Livelink consultant. I've also done with Alfresco, Hyperwave, Documentum and FileNET. I've been working in document management for almost 15 years. Before that I studied Computer Science/AI at Edinburgh University, and prior to that I wrote various games and simulations in assembler and BBC Basic.

Hobbies include gaming (computer games, roleplaying games, wargames and boardgames), reading, managing my Linux servers and programming overly complex simulations of the universe. I have a couple of Sourceforge projects, Mapcraft and Yagsbook, an open source RPG called Yags and I wrote the Cities Mapping Project.

Some Lists

Things I'm Doing

  • Working out kinks in the Yags martial arts system.
  • Painting lots of 25mm SF miniatures.
  • Figuring out how best to manage my backups

Software

  • http://mapcraft.glendale.org.uk/ - Mostly working on software to randomly generate a detailed universe for a Traveller campaign, including world maps for several hundred thousand worlds.

Reading

My reading time is currently very limited.

  • Accelerando

  • Flat Earth News
  • The Origin of Species
  • Hitchhiker, a biography of Douglas Adams
  • Them, by Jon Ronson
  • The Men Who Stare at Goats, by Jon Ronson
  • The Emotion Machine, by Marvin Minsky.
  • In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind, a book about how memory (and the mind) works from a biological perspective. Quite interesting, though I'd prefer it to skip the autobiography bits.
  • Sniper, a book about the history and tactics of sniping. Straightforward and an interesting read.

Gaming

  • Dark Heresy, in the middle of a campaign.

Previously:

  • Traveller, running a Traveller game using Yags.
  • Legend of the Five Rings, playing a Unicorn battle maiden.
