These are alternative rules for training, to replace the current Yags Traveller training rules.
Game sessions generally detail the more exciting parts of a character's life, when they are performing heroics, getting shot at, or making grand plans for world domination. Most of their life though will pass outside of the game session, and it is during this downtime that you have an opportunity to gain and improve your skills.
Each month of downtime allows a roll for skill improvement. This doesn't imply that it takes a whole month to learn what you do, just that
For each training session, the character chooses which of the available training sets to focus on. A training set may be an actual training course, or may be self-study or on-the-job learning. In any case, the way it works is the same. Due to the random nature of the results however, they do not really represent the results of a specific training course (i.e., it does not make sense to take a Computing training course, make the roll, and end up with experience on Electrician. It is better to think of it as making the roll, which determines which training course you managed to get on, and therefore what experience you obtained).
Each training set has a related attribute (given in parenthesis), and a list of 5 skills. These skills are listed in order of priority, with two Alpha skills, three Beta skills and a single Special skill. The Special skill is normally an attribute bonus.
After choosing a training set, roll a d20, and consult the following:
| d20 | Result |
|---|---|
| 1-5 | Alpha 1 |
| 6-10 | Alpha 2 |
| 11-13 | Beta 1 |
| 14-16 | Beta 2 |
| 17-19 | Beta 3 |
| 20 | Special |
A skill may actually be a list of skills, in which case the lowest skill gains experience, or the first listed if two or more have the same value. If skills are listed as A or B, then the character gets to chose.
If you have good access to training, then you may modify the roll by up to one point. If you have excellent access to training, then you can modify it by up to 2 points.
If the result is an attribute, then 1 XP is gained towards that attribute. If the result is a skill, then roll a further d20 and consult the following chart. The current level of the skill affects how many XP is gained towards it.
| Roll | 1-3 | 4-5 | 6-7 | 8+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-5 | 1 | - | - | - |
| 6-10 | 2 | 1 | - | - |
| 11-15 | 3 | 2 | 1 | - |
| 16-20 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| 21+ | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
Add the character's designated attribute to the roll. Add the quality of the trainer (if any) to the roll. This latter is always zero for learning on the job. It is equal to half their Teach skill.
If you gain experience in a skill, you may put the XP instead towards a technique in that skill.
The first two lines of skills listed are the alpha skills, the next 3 are the beta skills, and the final is the special.
